Reviews
Just in case you've never had the misfortune of playing against Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, let me tell you it is really damn annoying. Sure, Kalitas could also turn itself into a huge lifelinker, but Head of the Hunt has the upsides of enabling abilities and the ability to ambush attackers for value. This just looks like a busted rare to me, and there's no way you can realistically beat it if it goes unchecked.
Head of the Hunt is a replacement effect, so don't make the mistake I did of trying to “stack” them. You can sometimes ambush “” stuff like Rhovanion Rampager with this and make your opponent cry. Sacrificing to Rhovanion Rampager is okay with or “dies” stuff, but otherwise I tend to just trade it off asap for guaranteed value. Still an amazing card either way.
Head of the Hunt: 4/3 that's very punishing to run into; try to hold Strike/Slice for this if you suspect it, as otherwise your opponent will untap and get extra value from .
How to draft it
Roles in each deck
Goblin Army Threat
While it is on the battlefield, an opposing creature that would die is instead and you create a 2/2 Wolf. Bilbo's Deadly Slice, Stir Up Trouble, a Crude Bent Blade and every good block then come with a Wolf, and their Fearsome Goblin Pair or Rhovanion Rampager never gets its trigger.
How to play it
Learn the Goblin Army deckit in at the end of their turn or as a surprise blocker, then follow up with to collect Wolves. Both Pinecone Strike and Gnashing of Teeth's -5/-5 carry their own , and when two such effects apply the creature's controller picks one, so those spells give no Wolf. Its 3 toughness falls to an opposing Pinecone Strike, so line up a kill the same turn or the next.
Ferocious Wolves Threat
While it is on the battlefield, their creatures are instead of dying, and each one gives you a 2/2 Wolf. and 4 power make it a creature you can cast on their turn.
How to play it
Learn the Ferocious Wolves deckLand it before your , so Crude Bent Blade or Bilbo's Deadly Slice also makes a Wolf. With it can ambush a small attacker, or come down at the end of their turn when the Slice mana you held up went unused.
Removal Control Threat
Most spells you cast after it lands also give you a 2/2 Wolf, because an opposing creature that would die is instead and makes one. In a deck built on Bilbo's Deadly Slice, Crude Bent Blade and combat trades, most of your cards turn into , and the 4/3 with blocks well on its own.
How to play it
Learn the Removal Control deckHold 4 mana on their turn, it in after attackers are declared, then block, and the attacker you kill becomes a Wolf. If no attack comes, cast it at their end step and spend your next turn on . A second copy makes no extra Wolves, since a creature is only once.
