Reviews

Wood Elves is a classic Magic card that dates all the way back to 1997's Portal set. Three mana 1/1s that accelerate your mana like this have always been very good. Of course, this doesn't fix your colors like a Farhaven Elf might, but Wood Elves is a perfect fit for the blue/green elf deck where it accelerates you but also enables .

The lack of any sort of 2-mana dork besides Woodland Weavemaster (which is limited to elves and a terrible blocker) means “big green” decks must rely heavily on Wood Elves and can't start ramping until turn 3.

While Wood Elves has been decent for me, it notably doesn't fix your colors, forcing you to go deeper into the format's most lackluster color.

All of these are honestly pretty good though, and a great reason to run some Wood Elves and Hobbit Holes. I'm very skeptical of elves as a deck, but I have good experiences with these cards.

Here we just have a genuine core set card in the form of Wood Elves. This card is always good, and this set has a lot of good expensive Creatures to ramp into. Yes, this can't fix your mana, but it can get your Large Bear out a turn earlier. The body is nothing to write home about, but a three-mana 1/1 will at least chump block until you can get something better in play.

How to draft it

Roles in each deck

  • Elf Landfall Sets up the plan

The Forest it fetches onto the battlefield is an extra trigger, and the 1/1 body is an Elf for Woodland Weavemaster and Thranduil's Company. With Thranduil out, that means a 2/2 plus a 2/2 Elf for 3 mana.

    How to play it

The Forest enters untapped, so with four lands you can cast Wood Elves and still spend the new Forest on Quarrel or Nasty Little Rabbit. Your blue mana still has to come from your other lands. Later in the game, the 1/1 is a spare body to chump-block with.
