Combat runs in steps. You declare attackers, your opponent declares blockers, and then combat damage is dealt. Both players can cast in each step before it ends.
Declare attackers. On your turn you choose which of your untapped creatures attack. Attacking taps them, and they stay until your next untap step, so they can't block on your opponent's turn. A creature with attacks without tapping.
(Game basics) keeps a creature from attacking the turn it comes under your control, unless it has . It never stops a creature from blocking.
Declare blockers. Your opponent chooses which of their untapped creatures block. Each blocker blocks one attacker, and several blockers can gang up on the same attacker (a gang block). Some attackers limit who can block them:
- : only creatures with flying or can block it. A flier can block creatures without flying.
- : it can't be blocked except by two or more creatures. Gollum, Silent Slinker has menace, so a single blocker can't stop it.
