Cardsplain

The set was designed around five of the ten two-color decks. Only Goblin Army, Ferocious Wolves, Dwarves & Equipment, Draw Two and Elf Landfall have two-colored cards ( and hybrid cards) and a common dual land. The other five decks have no cards made for them. They work only when the cards in their colors are good on their own.

  • Ferocious Wolves (black-green). Keep a creature with power 4 or more on the battlefield, and cheap Wolves like Nighthowl Pursuer and Ravening Warg get their bonuses. Only Goblin Army wins more than its 56.9% over 57,277 games.
  • Removal Midrange (white-black). There are no two-colored cards and no shared mechanic. It wins 56.8% over 4,805 games with black removal plus white's strong uncommons. It's a good place to end up if you start in black and then white cards keep coming to you.
  • Dwarves & Equipment (red-white). Cheap Dwarves carry and attack early. cards get a bonus once you have an . The deck wins 56.5% over 52,797 games.
  • Draw Two (white-blue). and other card draw give you a second card each turn, other cards reward that second draw, and finish the game. It's strong at 56.4% over 58,594 games, but you have to track how many cards you've drawn each turn to get the bonuses.
  • Burn and Draw (blue-red). Spew Flame and Pinecone Strike kill creatures. Plunder the Trollshaws draws a card, and later two more with . Few people draft it, and it wins 55.2% over 4,886 games, a little under average.
  • Beasts and Burn (red-green). Ordinary Bear has the 4 power that Nasty Little Rabbit's needs, and Pinecone Strike burns a blocker out of the way. Beasts and Burn wins 54.6% over 2,822 games.
  • Removal Control (blue-black). Trade creatures early, answer the rest with Gnashing of Teeth, then win with fliers like Long Lake Nuisance. Online drafters take it fairly often, but it lands below average at 53.2% over 12,745 games.
  • Elf Landfall (blue-green). It's the weakest of the five designed decks, at 52.5% over 22,251 games. Draft it only if green and blue are both wide open.
  • Patchwork Midrange (white-green). It's the worst deck in the data at 49.7% over 1,323 games, so avoid it.

The less-played decks (Burn and Draw, Removal Midrange, Beasts and Burn, Patchwork Midrange) have a few thousand games or fewer each, so treat their exact numbers as rough. Also, Removal Midrange, Dwarves & Equipment and Draw Two are within half a point of each other, so treat them as tied rather than as third, fourth and fifth.

Choosing your deck. Lean black, prefer the decks near the top, and let the signals decide between them. If black and red cards aren't coming to you, don't fight your neighbors for Goblin Army. Take the deck that is open, even one from the middle of this list. Each deck has its own track later on the Learn path, with its key cards and how to play them.
