Reviews

What an incredible way to end a game! First, At the Door is a great creator that for 6 or more mana is going to give you a nice load of 2/2 Dwarf tokens. But then, you get to cast An Unexpected Party on the next turn and they all become 4/4s? United Front was one of the best cards in Avatar for a reason, and this card is probably just as powerful. And don't sleep on the fact that you could just run this out on the anthem side and swing a combat in your favor.

However, white has the best rares of any color by a substantial degree. An Unexpected Party, Fíli, Kíli, The Eagles Are Coming!, The Queen of Dale, Bard's Company, Dáin's Company… need I go on?

My pick for the strongest rare in the set. Keep in mind that you can sometimes get the for An Unexpected Party via , so I've yet not to this card in any deck.

Down, Down to Goblin-town: This can punish you for holding your like An Unexpected Party too long, so try to cash them in when the right moment comes.

How to draft it

Roles in each deck

  • Dwarves & Equipment Finisher

Name Dwarf as An Unexpected Party enters, and every Dwarf you control gets +2/+2. Before that you can cast its , At the Door ( ), for X 2/2 Dwarf . The card then goes to , and you cast the 4-mana from there on a later turn, the way every Adventure in the set works.

    How to play it

With 6 or more mana, cast At the Door for three or more Dwarves and turn them into 4/4s with the on a later turn. If you need to win a race or a combat now, skip the and cast the enchantment. Human Soldier from and tokens miss the bonus, since neither is a Dwarf.

  • Draw Two Finisher

At the Door is an X-cost that makes X 2/2 Dwarf . The card then goes to , and later you cast An Unexpected Party from there, an that gives creatures of the type you choose +2/+2. You have two good types to name: Dwarf after a big At the Door, or Human, which covers your Soldier tokens and most of your creatures.

    How to play it

In a long game, make as many Dwarves as your mana allows, then cast the next turn naming Dwarf, and they become 4/4s. With three or more Humans out early, skip the and cast the enchantment from your hand naming Human. The type is chosen as the enchantment enters, so count each type at that moment.

  • Removal Midrange Finisher

At the Door (, ) makes X 2/2 red Dwarf , and An Unexpected Party () comes from on a later turn to give your creatures of a chosen type +2/+2. A row of 4/4 Dwarves ends a game your has kept even.

    How to play it

The usual line is At the Door for X of 3 or more on turn 6 or later, then the Party naming Dwarf, which also pumps Fíli's , Iron Hills Blacksmith and Ori. Casting the straight from your hand skips the tokens, so start with the . Keep enough Plains for the , and don't sit on the card, since an opponent's discard can take it from your hand.

  • Patchwork Midrange Finisher

At the Door makes X 2/2 Dwarf , and An Unexpected Party, cast later from , gives the creature type you name +2/+2. Naming Dwarf turns those tokens into 4/4s, each big enough to grow Nasty Little Rabbit. Either half alone is still a strong card.

    How to play it

The usual order is At the Door first for as many as you can afford (6 mana makes three), then the on a later turn. If you are already ahead, skip the and cast An Unexpected Party for the type you have most of. The type is locked in as it enters, so count your creature types before you choose.
