Reviews

Not only does Bilbo get to be blue's best uncommon, it looks like he's blue's best common, too! Time and time again, we've seen 3-mana 2/1s that draw a card on entering, possibly with a bit of selection, and they've always been incredible. From Inspiring Overseer to Sibsig Appraiser, these cards are great to see in any set. Bilbo Baggins, Burglar only draws you a card, but if you slot its Take a Glance adventure spell into the mix, you get that little bit of extra selection, too. This is an awesome card, and I can't wait to draft a lot of them!

Blue has incredible tools in this format (Plunder the Trollshaws and Bilbo Baggins, Burglar), letting it out-draw most midrange/aggro decks.

Bilbo Baggins, Burglar looks like one of the most fun commons in the set. It's also pretty good. 2 isn't quite worth a card on its own, even for one mana . As an adventure on a three-mana Creature, though, it's great. You basically always want to cast both halves of this on the same turn unless you're really desperate. If you can, four mana for the whole package is excellent.

How to draft it

Roles in each deck

  • Draw Two Gets you extra cards

A that draws a card as it enters is at common, and Take a Glance, its 1-mana , scries 2. A second copy still draws as it enters, even though you keep only one of the two.

    How to play it

With 4 mana, cast Take a Glance and then Bilbo the same turn, so you 2 and draw the card you kept on top. Bilbo alone is the turn-3 play.

  • Elf Landfall Gets you extra cards

This 3-mana 2/1 draws a card when it enters, and its , Take a Glance, is a 1-mana 2. Little in this deck rewards the extra card, so it is filler that you take after and the payoffs.

    How to play it

With 4 mana, cast both halves in one turn, Take a Glance for 1 and then Bilbo from for 3. Mirkwood Nurturer can return him to your hand for another draw.

  • Removal Control Gets you extra cards

The 2/1 replaces itself when it enters, and Take a Glance () scries 2 first, so the card he draws is one you chose to keep on top.

    How to play it

With 4 mana, cast Take a Glance and then Bilbo from in the same turn. Stuck on 3 mana with nothing else to cast, play Bilbo on his own and lose the .

  • Burn and Draw Gets you extra cards

He replaces himself and fills the , but a 2/1 trades with little, so take or a sturdier creature first.

    How to play it

From turn 4 you can cast both halves in one turn for 4 mana. His name differs from Bilbo, Luckwearer's, so both Bilbos can stay on the battlefield together, and Hobbit Hole can fetch either.
