Reviews

Evolving Wilds is a simple dual land that you can run in any deck and treat basically the same as one of the other common dual lands. Two things however make Hobbit Hole stand out from its predecessor. Firstly, it obviously has the extra halflingcycling ability, which lets you turn this into a real spell when you draw it late in the game. The best part though is how it can double trigger abilities, which for blue/green in particular is going to make this a very high priority to pick up.

All of these are honestly pretty good though, and a great reason to run some Wood Elves and Hobbit Holes. I'm very skeptical of elves as a deck, but I have good experiences with these cards.

These are very similar, although Hobbit Hole has a surprisingly useful for decks that are blue and/or black.

Both Hobbit Hole and Elven Passage are excellent with cards, too.

You'll want to run 16 or 17 lands, with 8/8 basics or 9/8 basics, minus whichever ones you can replace with dual lands/Hobbit Holes.

How to draft it

Roles in each deck

  • Ferocious Wolves Gets you the color you need

Tapping and sacrificing it fetches a basic land , so it fixes whichever color you are short of. Late, halflingcycling (, discard it) finds a Halfling, which here means a Gollum, The Sackville-Bagginses or The Notary Hobbits.

    How to play it

The fetched land enters , so use it at the end of the opponent's turn or on a turn you don't need all your mana. Once you have enough lands, cycle it for a Gollum instead.

  • Draw Two Gets you the color you need

and it for a basic land of the color you need, which enters tapped. Halflingcycling (4 mana, discard it) searches for a Halfling card instead, and every Bilbo is a Halfling.

    How to play it

Use it as a land early, and cycle it for a Bilbo later instead of drawing a dead land. With Bilbo, Luckwearer already out, fetch a different Bilbo.

  • Elf Landfall Sets up the plan

Sacrificing it puts a basic land onto the battlefield , Forest or Island as you need. Its halflingcycling (, discard it) finds a Halfling such as Bilbo, Luckwearer or Bilbo Baggins, Burglar once you have lands to spare. The pre-release review expected this deck to prize it, but it slows you down, because it makes no mana itself and the basic arrives tapped.

    How to play it

Take a creature or spell over it. Hold it uncracked only while a card is on the battlefield, and crack it at least a turn before you need the basic's mana.

  • Removal Control Gets you the color you need

It fixes your mana by sacrificing itself for a basic land, and halflingcycling (, discard it) finds a Halfling instead. The ones worth finding here are the two Bilbos (Bilbo, Luckwearer and Bilbo Baggins, Burglar) and Gollum, Silent Slinker.

    How to play it

Count it as one of your 17 lands. Crack it for whichever basic you're short of, and with enough lands already, cycle it for Gollum, Silent Slinker or a Bilbo.

  • Removal Midrange Gets you the color you need

Hobbit Hole fetches whichever basic you are short of, which helps most with An Unexpected Party's in a deck that leans to Swamps. Take a playable spell over it, though.

    How to play it

Count it as one of your 17 lands, though it makes no mana itself and the basic arrives . it on a turn you don't need the mana, turn 1 at best. Drawn late with plenty of lands, pay to cycle it for a Halfling such as Gollum, Silent Slinker or Gollum the Abandoned.

  • Burn and Draw Gets you the color you need

and it for a tapped basic land of the color you are short of. Halflingcycling (pay 4 and discard it) finds a Halfling card instead, and both Bilbos are Halflings.

    How to play it

Count it as one of your 17 lands and crack it early for the missing color. Once you have lands to spare, cycle it for Bilbo, Luckwearer and set up Burglar's Plot against their .

  • Patchwork Midrange Gets you the color you need

Hobbit Hole becomes whichever basic your hand is missing, a Plains or a Forest. Played and cracked on the same turn, it gives Attercop and Thranduil two triggers, one as it enters and one for the land it fetches.

    How to play it

Crack it the turn you play it, for the color you are short of. Halflingcycling for rarely matters, because this deck has almost no Halfling cards.
